Sips 2018: Chicago Public Schools
“I am constantly inspired by the future that my students are reaching for.”
Mr. D's students need books!
In his words:
This is an amazing novel that is so close to many of their experiences. REFUGEE chronicles the journeys of three refugees during three different refugee crises: Syrian, Cuban, and Jewish.
Though they come from backgrounds where it would be easy to play the victim, most of them believe in personal responsibility and are going for their dreams.
The parents of our students often work two or three jobs. We have an amazing community - we are hard-working, driven, and hopeful for the future.
Last year, I had a student who crossed the border into the USA alone at 10 years old. He was sent by his family to live with his mother, who was already in Chicago. Along the way, he was taken advantage of, abused, and experienced major trauma.
Almost all of my students are immigrants or children of recent immigrants.
They relate to the refugee situation in Syria right now. They connect with idea of fleeing Cuba for a better life. They understand what it means to be unwanted like Jews in WWII Europe.
This book follows Syrian, Cuban, and Jewish refugees in three stories that connect in a surprising way.
Our Ask:
Right now Mr. Dykert's class has one copy of the book, but he would love a classroom set so that his students can read together this as part of a Refugee unit. We need 100 copies to fully furnish the books for his classes- donate below or see the "Event Tickets" page to help fund!
